Rhinoplasty (Nose Reshaping) Gold Coast

A rhinoplasty will improve the aesthetics or shape of the nose and a septoplasty may also improve breathing difficulties as well as any structural imperfections that are present. When the two surgeries are performed together the surgical term is Rhinoseptoplasty. This form of facial plastic surgery is also known as a nose job. 

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation, your chosen plastic surgeon will run you through all the rhinoplasty techniques. This can be determined by the initial examination of your facial features and the structure of the nose, in conjunction with your cosmetic concerns.

The surgeon will also discuss recovery time and all the risks and complications associated with the surgical procedure. Remember, any surgical or invasive procedure such as a rhinoplasty poses the risk of complications occurring. It is vital to discuss this with your surgeon, so you feel fully informed of the procedure.

Surgical Plan

There are two different ways surgeons approach cosmetic rhinoplasty procedures. These are:

• The Closed Rhinoplasty – also known as an internal rhinoplasty, it’s generally found that most procedures have the incisions inside the nasal cavity, whereby the surgeon can access the bone and cartilage to remove and reshape a bump on the bone and reduce the length of width or the tip. Some patients may require a small implant to be inserted over the bone to create a bridge or into the tip to lift and reshape. Should the nostril need to be narrowed, a small section of cartilage and skin is removed from the sides, leaving a barely noticeable incision mark.
• The Open Rhinoplasty – for more complicated reshaping, the surgeon may recommend an open procedure, accessing the cartilage and bone via a small incision between the base of the nostrils. The incision they make will fade and be barely perceptible in a short space of time. Where stitches are used, they are often dissolving, and the post-operative management is therefore uncomplicated as a result.

Recovery

After the operation, the nose will have a small splint over the bridge and a nasal packing (gauze or bolster dressing) under the nostrils. The dressing is removed prior to discharge from hospital and the splint between five and seven days after the procedure.

Results

This operation can decrease the overall size of the nose as well as reshaping the nose, reduce the width, smooth out a bump, straighten the nose and minimise the nostril. In some cases, patients will find that their breathing has improved as well.

Risks

The standard risks surrounding surgery of any type also apply to this operation, although they rarely occur. The specific risks include the need for a revision rhinoplasty should the aesthetic result displease the patient. Swelling may cause unevenness for the short term and numbness, which usually resolves itself within 8 weeks.
