A breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that goes by many names, some of which are; breast enhancement, breast enlargement, a breast job, or a boob job.

The most popular implants in Australia and New Zealand are silicone cohesive gel. The contents resemble a firm set jelly, and the envelope is a silicone shell with a smooth surface. The choice of implant needs to be discussed with the surgeon to ensure the correct base width and projection are recommended for the breast size required.

Initial Consultation

Surgical Plan

The operation can be performed in a hospital or accredited day surgery centre with a full general anaesthetic. Once the patient is asleep, the cosmetic surgeon makes an incision through the skin and then lifts the breast tissue and if necessary, the muscle, to make a pocket in which to place the implant. The incision is closed with dissolving stitches under the skin.

Incision Choices

The patient is able to decide where the incision is placed. The options available to them are:

  • Under the natural fold of the breast – this is the most popular and is termed the concealed incision
  • Around the edge of the areola­– this will settle to a barely visible mark
  • In the arm pit­ – the incision is barely noticeable; however, the surgical procedure takes longer and can be more costly

The Operating Day

This is a day only procedure taking from one to two hours of operating time – the entire process from arrival at the hospital to discharge takes ½ day. Drain tubes are rarely used in this procedure, and the patient will have a small dressing over the wound site. Each surgeon has a specific protocol for his patients, and these will be discussed in detail during the initial consultation.

There may be some discomfort requiring medication for 3 to 5 days post-surgery; swelling is normal for up to 4 weeks. Over time the breasts will settle, becoming softer, looking and feeling more natural.

Most patients find the shape of the breasts will continue to improve over a 4-month period.

As mentioned, you may feel some discomfort for 3 to 5 days post surgery, and swelling for up to 4 weeks. It is recommended that you have a family member or friend help you in the initial recovery phase with day to day tasks that require the use of your upper body, given the discomfort that comes initially from breast surgery of any sort. 

After the first week, you will most likely feel better and stronger, but you should still refrain from attending work, school, or extracurricular activities until 10 days post-surgery. 

At the 3-4 week stage, you should be back to living a normal life, but you should still be cautious about exercise and putting any strain on your upper body. Your surgeon will guide you through this phase and let you know when you can return to exercise. 

Additional healing will continue for three months after surgery, but you should be able to function normally after a month.

The breasts can feel hard and look uneven if the scar tissue surrounding the implant contracts – a problem known as capsular contracture. Should this happen, there may be a short revision necessary. The breasts can also look unnatural if the implant is positioned incorrectly.

The wound can be slow to heal or break down if the patient places pressure on the site within the first 3 weeks, therefore all upper bodywork and exercise are not recommended during this period.

Each implant manufacturer has their own guarantee, and this will be given to you as part of the decision-making process. It is also recommended that you find a qualified specialist plastic surgeon to perform breast surgery for the best long term results. 

There is no Medicare coverage, so as a result private health funds will not cover this procedure either. The cost of the procedure starts from $10,000.
